In this letter to Samuel May, Wendell Phillips mentions the success of May's "foreign tour" and introduces him to "my young friend, Joseph H. Putnam now connected with your institution." Phillips calls him "really a man of talent" and tells May that Putnam needs "just what you can give him a little sympathy - some literary advice - & some occasional tone of encouragement." He also tells May that he "hope[s] much from him [Putnam] & such as he for showing the capacity of the colored race to the doubters about us."
